Why Wood is Superior to Vinyl

If you’ve been shopping around for fence supplies, you may have stumbled upon vinyl materials. This material gets a lot of praise, some even saying that it’s better to use than wood materials. Sure, vinyl has some advantages, like easy install and mildew resistance, but when compared to wood, it can’t even compete.

Short Lifespan

If you’re trying to figure out which material you should use for your fence, keep in mind that there are a few disadvantages when choosing vinyl. Firstly, at such a high cost, vinyl doesn’t have that long of a lifespan. With your fence supplies being more expensive, you would expect it to last longer than others, as well as hold up against natural elements. So keep in mind that choosing wood for your fence supplies will easily last just as long, if not longer, at a fraction of the price.

Vulnerability to the Elements

In Colorado we get 300 days of sunshine, so if you’re thinking of choosing vinyl for your fence supplies, think again! Why? Vinyl is incredible vulnerable to cracking and crumbling from sun exposure. So 300 days of consistent sun light will rapidly deplete your fence’s lifespan. Not only is sunlight detrimental, but high speed winds as well. High speed winds are very common in Colorado, putting vinyl at risk of twisting. Whereas this twisting and bending wouldn’t occur with wood because wood fences are more securely fastened together. The intense exposure to sunlight and wind over periods of time will damage your fence, meaning you’ll have to make some repairs, which also happens to be another disadvantage of vinyl.

Difficult Maintenance

When the time comes to replace your fence or parts of your fence, you’ll want an easy and hassle free process. Being man made, vinyl is harder to repair and can’t be moved after installation. This would make it exponentially more difficult to maintain, making Vinyl fences the exact opposite of what you want if you’re looking for a material that’s easy to work with. So when you’re shopping around for your fence supplies, keep in mind that if you want something easy to work with and easy to maintain, choose wood rather than vinyl.
