If you are thinking about installing a fence, you may be overwhelmed and stressed. It takes a lot of decision making and steps to pick the right fence for your home and arrange all the different companies for supplies, install, and maintenance. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind before you install your fence.

What to do Before You Install Your Fence

Tip #1 – Choose the best fence for your yard

Now, by reading this you’re probably thinking- what does that mean? Isn’t a fence just a fence?  In some cases, yes, but when you are choosing a fence for your home you want to make sure it will check off all your needs and wants. You will want to consider things like whether you have animals that need to be protected. Are your pets small and fit through tiny spaces? If so, you may want to consider a privacy fence with no wide gaps. Perhaps you have no pets or kids to keep secured and you just want to outline your property, then maybe split rail is best. Consult your supplier and your contractor so they can help you decide which type is a better fit.

Tip #2 – Consider the Maintenance

Each type of fencing has upkeep that follows, some more than others. You will want to consider this when deciding which type of fencing is right for you. If you have a busy life and don’t want to deal with repairs or rebuilds down the road, ask your contractor for their recommendation on which type of fencing to get. You can also prevent the amount of upkeep needed by making sure your fence is properly installed and sealed whether that’s with stain or clear sealant. By taking these precautions you can elongate the lifespan of your fence.

Tip #3 – Check Your HOA

Before you even go as far as looking at the different types of fencing options you have, check with your HOA and their regulations. The last thing you want is to find a type of fencing you love and have your HOA not allow it.  Each HOA is different and their rules and regulations may vary. So, check with them on not only the material of fence but the height at which it can stand. Trust us when we say you will be happy you checked.

Tip #4 – Picking Your Contractor

Now, this is probably the most important step. When you are installing a fence and you don’t want to do it yourself, make sure you look for a reliable and experienced contractor. Check their company licensing status and their references to make sure they will do a good job. You want to ensure they will install your fence properly because if it is not it may rot, decay, or not withstand damage as well.
